Stefano Bemer Bespoke Shoemakers – true artisans

Almost 30 years ago, in 1983, Stefano Bemer, brilliant designer and extremely talented shoemaker founded his own company. The firm, still creates hand made shoes, eventhough Stefano passed away in 2012, according to its founder principles – passion, commitment, craftmaship and highest quality.

The new-co Stefano Bemer was co-founded by family business Scuola del Cuoio and Tommaso Melani as a new CEO. Scuola, founded in 1950s and placed inside the Monastery of Santa Crose, is a firm known for its bespoke and RTW handbags and accesories created with the same passion and dedication as Stefano’s shoes. Stefano Bemer bespoke shoemakers has recently launched its first ready-to-wear SS14 line of shoes. What are its characteristics? Most of all listetning to the customer, personalization, understanding customer’s desires, availability of modifications and wide range of unusual materials as well as very elegant lasts. As a best example of the collection Tommaso presents an unlined loafer “a tubolare” (tube) made in soft suede antelope Kudu leather, which is available in a variety of colors. Tommaso’s comment on the RTW line: “The project of our RTW was conceived with the idea of a brand new approach to quality in this segment: our RTW shoes are by all means a Bespoke shoe made on standard sized last, they share all the materials, components, procedures and technique with those of our world renown bespoke service. The only one difference that we decide would differentiate the RTW from the Bespoke is that the sole is stitched on the welt with a classic Goodyear machine (the welt is still hand-stiched on the upper though), while our Bespoke is stitched by hand with two needles. My decision was clear: create an artisanal shoe of indisputable quality for those that can appreciate the refinement of a Bespoke shoe in a RTW product.” Thanks to the precious archives Stefano Bemer can offer not only shoes made in elephant, cordovan or shark leather but also new ‘sophisticated’ proposal as ostrich, alligator, hippo or Kudu. All these materials are avaiable in RTW as well as bespoke lines. The brand naturally offers shoes in ‘classic’ leathers as calfskin (France) and suede (English). Even considering such a wide variety of materials and styles the company’s main policy is not only use materials of excellent quality but more importantly that come from places where the animal died from the natual causes or was culled to reduce the numbers (as in African natural reserves). All leathers still undergo the same processes as those used century ago which gives the leather its longevity and comfort. Even the sewing thread is created by twisting linen with pitch and beeswax. The shank is also made from natural material – wood. This is what makes the shoe very comfortable and light in the same time. I haven’t mentioned it in my previous post (link here) but the shoes which come in a nice wooded box have also a cleaning kit included (shoe waxes, brushes, polishes) as a sign of firms dedication to proper storage and care of its products. Yes, the shoe wax is natural as well, you are right.

I am aware of the fact that not everyone can offer to spend this amount of money on shoes but I think it is really nice to appreciate highest quality as an ideal item, subject of admiration or maybe just a curiosity. Anyway, if you have an opportunity and you are in London or Florence please make yourself a pleasure and visit Stefano Bemer’s concession at New&Lingwood at Jermyn Street in London. I would also encourage you to try one of the models on and experience the same unity of foot and shoe as I have. You will remember the feeling for a long time.

Below you can find some photos of the company’s premises in Florence, hand work and some of the more interesting models of their shoes.

Stefano Bemer Srl Via San Niccolò 2 – 50121, Firenze (Italia) Ph: +39.055.046.0476 – Fax: +39.055.046.0477   30 lat temu, w 1983 roku, Stefano Bemer, genialny projektant i wspaniały szewc, założył swoją własną firmę. Firmę, która mimo przedwczesnej śmierci Stefano w 2012, wciąż produkuje ręcznie robione buty zgodnie z wartościami jej założyciela – pasją, poświęceniem i najwyższej klasy rzemiosłem.
