B&Tailor bespoke tailors – Korean flair

B&tailor bespoke

B&Tailor bespoke tailors

Nowadays we tend to associate best tailors in the world with British Savile Row or Italian tailors, maybe French or Spanish tailoring houses too. However I would like to present you a story of a tailor from Korea, place you would not normally consider to be a sartorial empire.
The legendary quality of Japanese shoemakers is well-know, it is becoming a standard for Korean tailors as well. Their craftsmanship, most of them often learned the craft in Europe, is outstanding, work ethic and style both on par with best tailors in the world. B&Tailor bespoke are one of the sensations in #menswear world, mainly due to their amazing tumblr profile, is featured in todays post. Many of similar houses around the world are being run by the second generation of tailors – Master Tailor Park Jungyul and his two sons Changwoo (older with glasses, often on photos) and Changjin (younger). Changwoo is very passionate about tailoring and menstyle while the younger is a trained cutter and passionate photographer, hence made his older brother famous everywhere online.

Park Jung Yul – master tailor of B&Tailor bespoke

History

Park Jung Yul started practising tailoring in 1967 in Chunju, back at the time  when he used to live in a factory. One of hist first assignments was to heat up the irons in the morning, factory did not have electricity. After 6 months Jung Jul started practising with the needle and after another 2 years he moved to Seul. He got a job in one of the best tailoring houses who were making suits for the President. In order to develop his skills he needed someone to teach him. Education though was not as accessible back then in Korea as it is now. Master tailors were afraid to loose apprentices so they would not allow them to learn tailoring.  It was the same with other companies and factories. Jungyul started working for free then at different tailors around Seul only to learn and gain more experience.

Finally in the summer of 1980 he started Boryeong Tailor – from whom B&Tailor bespoke got its current name. During the great Asian financial crisis in 1997 the house almost went bankrupt. They haven’t paid for the rent for 10 months. B&Tailor started making bespoke garments for the local pastors at cost and surprisingly they caught people’s attention. More exposure as well as publicity allowed them to get over the crisis. I was also told that Master Tailor while trying to keep the company on track, was helping the poor and served them as much as he could.

The only thing he could do was to trust in God and focus on what he was doing best – bespoke suitsChangjin about his father during Asian crisis in 1997

They have gotten better since then and are becoming only more popular in Europe and America.

In todays B&Tailor bespoke services, father Park Jungyul is the Head Cutter. Younger son is a trained cutter too while the other son Changwoo deals with marketing, hr and social media. As both brothers admit Liverano is not only their favourite tailor but maybe more importantly a person, someone they admire for his work ethic and personality. Both called Liverano being ‘like father’ to them which shows a great appreciation and close relation.

It should not be a surprise to see similarities between Florentine and Korean tailor. Younger brother, Changjin spent 5 years in Milan learning tailoring during his time in Europe. It is interesting that he once said that his and his father style of cutting would be slightly different and no matter the training the cut will always be personal to each cutter. Those must be the slight details in craft that one has hard time noticing unless is a trained tailor too.

Master Tailor at work

B&Tailor style

I asked Changjin to describe their style as I thought that would give us the best understanding and description of what B&Tailor bespoke suit is like. This is what he replied: “We try to make shoulder, chest and hip comfortable. Also we always try our best to make our suit look elegant. We focus very much on the balance of a suit. And we improved sewing skills compared to last year. I think we will try adjusting our work in the future of bespoke. Our father, us and our tailors are Korean so we are trying to make and show the beautiful Korean line on the suit.”

In another interview I found, Changwoo said that their style is influenced by Italian tailoring, is classic but modern and that they would evolve and adjust in time. He also said one other thing that in my opinion Asian tailor in general have in common. He said: “maybe it is their [Asian] personality or culture but if you ask me about differences between British or Italian tailors and us I find Korean tailors to be very neat and meticulous”. My limited experience with Korean is very much in line with what Chad (short of Changwoo) said. They are very respectful, sincere, accurate, very gentleman-like and it can be noted in personal or even via emails.
‘Comfortable’ is a word often being used to describe jackets by those who already have B&Tailor bespoke garments. Nicely shaped jacket with famously rolled lapel yet a lot of room inside. Definitely cut with comfort in mind. Jackets have soft and quite extended shoulders.

One of their characteristics are not only the roll of the lapel but also small detail at the end of the line leading to gorge, between collar and lapel. Have a look below. (I haven’t seen it shaped this way on older suits so it might be something they are developing)

B&Tailor’s famous roll

B&Tailor bespoke is one of those tailoring houses who almost does not advertise themselves. Apart from running beautiful tumblr profile with outstanding images by Changjin and rare interviews you won’t see them offering free suits to influencers or bloggers. I was surprised to find out that they were not aware of one of the biggest European classic style bloggers. My impression from talking to B&Tailor guys has always been the same, probably passed onto them by father: do your job and focus on things you can control. Let your work speak for itself seams like their marketing motto. Believe me, they do. Myself being an aspiring photographer I can only dream about rendering classic tailoring as well as Changwoo and his Leica with 35mm 1.4 Summilux.

Starting from last year it is possible to order B&Tailor bespoke garments in Europe. It is done via their friend and tailor Robin Pettersson, based in Gothenburg. He organizes Trunk Shows in Sweden and London and comes every 6 weeks. I ordered a suit during Robin’s first visit back in February. More details on what I ordered in the next post where I will describe the design and first meeting too.

As always, thanks for reading!
