BlueLoafers: What is your story Saman? You are quite young as for a person that owns a menswear accessories brand, aren’t you? What made you start your own brand?
Saman Amel: I suppose I am quite young… Things have been taking off for us during the last year, however, I have been doing this quite a bit longer than that. I started the brand in early 2009. I started off by myself but Dag, who’s now doing art direction and communication for the brand, soon came to join me. To me it felt like the natural way to express myself and I really enjoyed the whole idea of running my own thing without having someone telling me what to do.

Tak, wydaje sie, ze wciaz jestem dosc mlody..Wszystko zaczelo sie dla nas dobrze ukladac w tamtym roku, mimo, ze zajmuje sie tym juz jakis czas. Swoja marke zalozylem na poczatku 2009 roku. Zaczalem sam, ale niedlugo pozniej dolaczyl do mnie Dag, ktory teraz jest dyrektorem artystycznym i komunikacji naszej marki. Dla mnie od poczatku wydalo sie to naturalna koleja rzeczy w procesie ekspresji wlasnej osoby i bardzo podoba mi sie pomysl prowadzenia wlasnej marki bez kogokolwiek ponad mna, mowiacego mi co mam robic.
Who stands behind Saman Amel brand? Is it only you? If not, then what other members of the team do?
As I mentioned I have one partner, his name is Dag Granath. We make an excellent team I think. I am putting all my effort into production and Dag is doing communication and brand identity. He thinks he’s too young to call himself an art director but that is basically what he is doing for the brand. Through the years I have been receiving a lot of help from numerous people, however, me and Dag are the only two who are more closely connected to the brand. I call myself brand manager and Dag art director but really we do everything together; it’s an organic process!

Tak jak juz wspomnialem, mam jednego partnera, nazywa sie Dag Granath. Mysle, ze tworzymy swietny zespol. Cala swoja energie wkladam w proces produkcji a Dan zajmuje sie komunikacja i identyfikacja marki. Uwaza, ze jest za mlody zeby nazywac go dyrektorem, ale w zasadzie to jest to czym sie zajmuje. Przez te kilka lat otrzymalem calkiem sporo wsparcia od wielu ludzi, jednak tak naprawde to ja i Dag jestesmy z marka najblizej. Nazywam siebie Managerem a Daga Dyrektorem artystycznym, ale prawde mowiac robimy wszystko razem – to jest calkiem naturalny proces!
Tell us more about the characteristics of a Saman Amel tie
I think that the handicraft, the construction and the choice of fabrics is what constitutes the product and gives it its characteristics. The product is full of life and to some extent also youth – it’s not a product which wishes to raise the formality of an outfit but rather to personalize it. The tie is constituted merely of the shell fabric and has no lining, this makes it soft and more alive!

Mysle, ze przede wszystkim rzemioslo, konstrukcja i wybor fabryk to cos co nas od roznia od konkurencji i jest dla nas charakterystyczne. Produkt jest pelen zycia i w pelny sensie takze ‘mlodziezowy’ – na pewno nie jest czyms co ma za zadanie podniesc formalnosc stroju, ale raczej go spersonalizowac. Krawat sklada sie jedynie z warstwy zewnetrznej tkaniny, bez podszewki, co czyni go bardzo miekkim i jakby pelniejszym zycia!
Lets talk about the creation process now. Can you tell us more about your inspirations, fabrics, where do you source them, how do you choose them?
We get our inspirations from so many different areas. Actually, clothing is not the key part of our inspiration. If you visit out tumblr you’ll see some posts that reflect this. We like photography, architecture and art. I think that when you create something it is important not to have an exact idea of what it is that you want to do. If you see a picture of someone wearing something and you make that specific item then it really isn’t you making it. However, when a feeling is triggered and you explore that feeling, that’s when your mind is somewhat liberated. I try to trigger these feelings by looking at pictures, movies or by reading and when I get it I just try to ride it and see what comes out of it.

Nasze inspiracje pochodza z bardzo wielu roznych zrodel. Wlasciwie to odziez nie jest glownym zrodlem naszych inspiracji. Jesli zagladniesz na naszego bloga (tumblr) to zobaczysz wlasnie posty ktore o tym swiadcza. Lubimy fotografie, architekture i sztuke. Wydaje mi sie, ze kiedy cos tworzysz to waznym jest aby nie miec w glowie wyraznej idei co do tego jak ma faktycznie wygladac finalny produkt. Jesli widzisz u kogos rzecz ktora Ci sie podoba, a pozniej ja wykonujesz to tak naprawde nie Ty ja wykonales. Jesli jednak poddasz sie temu uczuciu i podarzysz za nim, probujac go zglebic to wtedy Twoj umysl jest w pewnym sensie wyzwolony. Staram sie wlasnie wyzwalac te uczucia poprzez ogladanie zdjec, filmow czy poprzez czytanie i kiedy w koncu to czuje, staram sie cos z tym zrobic i zobaczyc co powstanie.
You have recently prepared the SS14 collection. Even though it is not available yet, could you maybe tell us a little bit more about it?
SS14 is really a breakthrough for us I think. For example this collection has been much more thought through and planned than our prior ones. We got some new great fabrics coming up and you will be seeing a lot of patterns from us this season. Actually we are doing something a little extra this collection – a separate drop of pocket squares with an amazing print and a pretty decent storytelling along with it.
Niedawno przygotowaliscie nowa kolekcje na sezon Wiosna/Lato 2014. Mimo, ze nie jest jeszcze dostepna czy moglbys powiedziec o niej cos wiecej?
Nowa wiosenna kolekcja na rok 2014 jest dla nas przelomowa, tak mysle. Na przyklad, tegoroczna kolekcja zostala o wiele bardziej przemyslana i zaplanowana niz poprzednie. W tym sezonie dostepne beda swietne tkaniny, a takze bardzo wiele tekstur. W zasadzie to robimy w tym roku jeszcze cos ekstra – oddzielna ‘kolekcje’ poszetek z wspanialymi nadrukami i calkiem przyzwoitymi historiami do opowiedzenia.
What is your typical customer like?
We have always been aware of the fact that our product isn’t the most commercial one and that our base of customers probably isn’t the largest. I think that our typical customer is one who has an eye for handicraft and that can appreciate the work that we put into every product – a conscious customer who is not buying out of impulse but who has some knowledge of our brand an interest in menswear in general.
Kim jest Twoj typowy klient?
Zawsze bylismy swiadomi tego, ze nasz produkt nie jest najbardziej komercyjnym i dlatego baza naszych klientow nie jest najwieksza. Typowy klient to ktos kto ma oko do wykonania, rzemiosla i ktory potrafi docenic prace jaka wkladamy w wykonanie naszych produktow – swiadomy klient ktory nie kupuje pod wplywem impulsu, ale ma wiedze o naszej marce i jest zainteresowany moda meska w ogole.
How would you encourage men to dress better and care about quality products in their wardrobe?
I think that people in general are getting tired of lousy quality. The way we consume in the Western world is about to change I think. The awareness of the implications of our consumption is getting greater by each year and I hope that people over time can develop a more conscious approach to quality and consumption. “Why buy one tie when you could by two for the same price?” That argument is invalid and ignorant I think. Garments with high quality and with a friendly productions process behind them is so much more than a question of pure economics. I think people are slowly starting to buy less but better, at least that’s what I hope.
Jak zachecilbys mezczyzn do ubierania sie lepiej i dbania o kupowanie produktow dobrej jakosci?
Mysle, ze ludzie w ogolnosci zaczynaja byc zmeczeni beznadziejna jakoscia. Mysle tez, ze sposob w jaki konsumujemy w Zachodnim swiecie niedlugo sie zmieni. Swiadomosc konsekwencji tego w jaki sposob robimy zakupy jest coraz wieksza z roku na rok i mam nadzieje, ze ludzie z czasem rozwina u siebie wieksza swiadomosc jakosci i konsumpcji. “Czemu kupic jeden krawat kiedy moge miec dwa w tej samej cenie?” Ten argument jest ignorancyjny i juz niewazny. Produkty o wysokiej jakosci i produkowane w przyjazny sposob to cos wiecej niz tylko kwestia ekonomii. Widze, ze ludzie zaczynaja kupowac mniej, ale lepiej, a przynajmniej mam taka nadzieje, ze to sie dzieje.
What are your brand plans for the future?
A lot is going on within the brand. That’s all I have to say about that at this point. Stay tuned!
Jakie sa plany marki na przyszlosc?
Bedzie sie duzo dzialo w naszej marce. Na teraz to wszystko co moge powiedziec, wiec badzcie czujni!
Do you have any style icons?
Basically all of my close friends have a great sense of style. I pick up new stuff from them every day basically. I think the ones close to me are my greatest inspirations; icons, however, I’m not so sure of.
Czy masz jakies ikony stylu?
Wlasciwie to wszyscy moi bliscy przyjaciele maja swietne wyczucie stylu. Prawie codziennie wybieram od nich jakas nowa rzecz. Zdecydowanie ci najblizej mnie inspiruja mnie najbardziej. Czy sa jednak ikonami, nie jestem pewien.
Where one can purchase your ties?
Within a few months we will have our first retailers in Sweden and Scandinavia. We have been very selective when it comes to retailers and we really want it to feel right; now I think we’re getting there. The easiest way to get your hands on one is through our website. What other menswear brands do you like?
Oh gosh, I have tons of brands I fancy. I am a huge fan of Kiton of course. We have a close friend, Alessandro, who is working for them and during the Pitti Uomo fair in January he gave us a full tour through their stuff. Their unwillingness to compromise is admirable and so rare these days. The tailor house of Sciamat and their eccentric house style also really speaks to me as well. I’ve met Nicola Ricci a few times and he is such an inspiring person! Both Dag and I have a lot of brands within sportswear that we love as well though. I mean everything Massimo Osti and Paul Harvey ever laid their hands on is just fantastic.
Teraz bardziej osobiscie. Jakie sa Twoje ulubione marki?
Oj, mam setki marek ktore mi sie podobaja. Jestem wielkim fanem marki Kiton. mamy bliskiego znajomego, Alessandro, ktory dla nich pracuje i podczas tegorocznego Pitti Uomo w styczniu zaprezentowal nam ich cala kolekcje. Ich bezkompromisowe podejscie do jakosci jest naprawde imponujace w dzisiejszych czasach. Pracownia krawiecka Sciamat i ich dosc ekscentryczny styl takze nam bardzo odpowiada. Spotkalem Nicole Ricci’ego kilka razy i to bardzo inspirujaca osoba! Oboje z Dagiem mamy tez wiele marek sportowych ktore nam sie podobaja. Which shoe brands are your favourite?
I mix high and low when it comes to shoes. Alden and Alfred Sargent for suiting and New Balance with a pair of slacks – or vice versa.
A ktore marki butow nosisz?
Mieszam te drogie i tansze marki ze soba. Alden i Alfred Sargent do garnituru, a New Balance do zwyklych spodni, albo na odwrot.
Do you know any Polish tailors or shoemakers? (I am asking because I am originally from Poland)
Of course I have seen a lot of Zaremba on social media and from my understanding they have some amazing stuff. My colleague Dag actually has an uncle who lives in Krakow, he is a professor in literature with focus upon Slavic language I think. Dag goes there quite often and from what I’ve heard it’s just great.
