Best English shoes of 2014 by Blue Loafers – black leather captoe oxfords

Shoes is the topic I really like to cover on my website. There are some reviews on other blogs and websites which try to describe best classic shoes a man can get. The reason they do not create any grades or rankings is quite simple – there are too many factors. I believe though that when shoes are limited to a certain style  – kind of a ranking can be created – which I hope will help you in some way in buying the right pair for you. I focused on a standard, classic shoe: black calf leather oxford. Every man should own a pair of black oxfords, no doubt about it. So why not compare models from different brands or even lines of shoes and try to sort them using simple rating. Let’s give it a try.

Buty to temat, ktory bardzo lubie poruszac na blogu. Mozna znalezc rozne recenzje czy oceny na innych stronach, ktore probuja zaprezentowac jak najlepsza pare butow jakie tylko mozna kupic. Powod dla ktorego nie sa tworzone rankingi jest dosc prosty – ocena zazwyczaj jest dosc subiektywna, a poza tym jest duzo roznych czynnikow, ktore wplywaja na ocene. Wierze, jednak, ze kiedy ograniczymy buty do jednego rodzaju, a w zasadzie modelu – to taki ranking mozna stworzyc – a ponad to, mam nadzieje, ze okaze sie pomocny w zakupach. Skupilem sie na standardowym, klasycznym skorzanym, czarnym oxfordzie. Bez watpienia kazdy mezczyzna powinien taki model miec w szafie. Dlaczego w takim razie nie sprobowac porownac tego samego modelu z roznych marek i posortwac je uzywajac prostego rankingu? Sprobuje to zrobic.

First, it is important to note assumptions I made:

1. Only English brands (does not mean shoes are actually produced in England) – tylko angielskie marki
2. Only black oxfords – tylko czarne proste oxfordy
3. I considered two categories: quality, which also includes aesthetic impression, last shape, fit and the other is price. Wzialem pod uwage dwie glowne kategorie: ‘jakosc’, ktora takze zawiera estetyke, ksztalt kopyta, dopasowanie i wykonczenie oraz osobno cene.
4. I did not consider leather quality but I assume it is included in the price by the manufacturer – Nie bralem pod uwage jakosci wykorzystanej skory bo wierze, ze to uwzglednione jest w cenie buta
5. All opinions are mine – wszystkie opinie sa wylacznie moje
6. No brands cooperated when creating this ranking – zadna marka nie brala udzialu przy pisaniu tego posta/rankingu

Scoring and winning formula

Points are given for ‘quality’ and price. The cheapest gets 10 points and the best ‘quality’ (in my opinion) gets 10 as well. The worst and most expensive gets 1 point. Total Score is calculated based on the following formula:

Punkty przyznalem w dwoch kategoriach – ‘jakosc’ i cena. Najtanszy model dostaje 10 pkt i najlepszy w kategorii ‘jakosc’ takze 10 pkt. Najgorszy w obu kategoriach po 1 pkt. Calkowity wynik jest obliczony wg ponizszego wzoru:

T = 4Q + P,

where:
Q – ‘quality’ mark, wynik za ‘jakosc’
P – price mark, wynik za cene

Table can be easily sorted. It depends if you prefer to focus on aesthetics, leather, quality, finish and fit or price as your main factor. In my opinion ‘quality’ is about 4 times more important than price and this formula has been used.

Tablica ktora wkleilem jest sortowalna, mozna ja dowolnie zmieniac. To zalezy od tego czy wolicie skupic sie na estetyce, jakosci, skorze oraz ksztalcie czy raczej cena jest glownym czynnikiem. W moim rankingu ‘jakosc’ ma wage 4, a cena 1 i tak zostala obliczona koncowa ocena.

Results

The results are not surprising although there are a few brands which are worth mentioning and further explanation. The best Black Oxford shoe made by an English brand is John Lobb RTW. It’s score is 86.1/100. The next three brands got almost identical score of approx. 82 points, Edward Green being the best and followed by Foster & Son Premium and Gaziano & Girling. G&G finally finished at 4th place because of its higher price than the competitors, £924 is quite a lot, especially considering the lower price of EG or John Lobb – both about £700 (it is worth mentioning that G&G provides us with a pair of shoe trees). These four brands create some sort of tip of the mountain. There is quite a gap behind them in terms of quality. We are also entering a lower price point so much more affordable models.

Wyniki w zasadzie nie zaskakuja, choc kilka marek zasluguje na opis i wytlumaczenie. Najlepszym czarnym oxfordem na rynku produkowanym przez angielska marke jest model od Johna Lobba. Koncowy wynik to 86.1 na 100 mozliwych. Nastepne trzy modele/marki uzyskaly niemal identyczny wynik w granicach 82 punktow. Kolejnosc to Edward Green, a za nim seria Premium od Foster&Son oraz Gaziano&Girling. G&G zostali sklasyfikowani w koncu na miejscu 4 ze wzgledu na cene, sa dosc znacznie drozsze – £924 w porownaniu do ok £700 za EG i Lobba (warto jednak dodac, ze w odroznieniu od tych marek G&G razem z butami dostarcza prawidla). Wyglada na to, ze te 4 marki tworza swego rodzaju wierzcholek. Sa ta zdecydowanie najlepsze buty, a w kwestii jakosci wystepuje po nich wyrazna przerwa. Wchodzimy tez w znacznie przystepniejszy cenowo zakres cenowy.

The competition at this stage is very strong. We’ve got three similar brands, both in terms of price and quality: Cheaney Imperial, Crockett&Jones Handgrade and Alfred Sargent Exclusive. Price varies between £385 and £485 so if you want to save yourself a £100 go for AS Exclusive.

Konkurencja w tym zakresie jest bardzo duza. Zaczynamy od 3 porownywalnych serii butow: Cheaney Imperial, Crockett&Jones Handgrade oraz Alfred Sargent Exclusive. Cena waha sie pomiedzy £385 i £485, ale jesli chcecie zaoszczedzic ok £100 to wybierzcie AS Exclusive.

Next, we have got a big group of shoes, very similar in quality and price and it was really difficult for me to differentiate them in any way. Church’s Custom Grade got highest score but the interesting model is the Wildsmith. It cost’s only £285, has a nice sleek last and bevelled waist. It also has the highest quality/price ratio from this group so it is my favourite.

Nastepnie mamy dosc spora grupe butow, bardzo podobnych pod wzgledem jakosci i ceny, wiec dosc trudnym bylo roznroznienie ich w jakikolwiek sposob. Linia Church’s Custom Grade otrzymala najwyzszy wynik, ale bardzo ciekawa marka jest Wildsmith. Kosztuje jedynie £285 a otrzymujemy ladne smukle kopyto i waski oraz taliowany glanek. Jest to model ktory w tej grupie ma najwyzszy wspolczynnik jakosci do ceny i jest moim ulubionym.

We enter a very affordable price range now, starting with Sanders Diplomats, Cheaney Classics and Herring Royal. All scored above 50 which is very good and all can be purchased for less than £300. Wkraczamy teraz w strefe butow bardzo przystepnych cenowo. Zaczynamy od Sanders Diplomats, Cheaney Classics i Herring Royal. Wszystkie otrzymaly wynik powyzej 50 pkt, co jest bardzo dobra ocena, a wciaz kosztuja ponizej £300.  

Considering the competitors from the beginning of the paragraph, £200 seems like a cheap shoe. Starting with highest scorer in this group Loake 1880 and ending at Pediwear. Both in terms of score and price Loake model looks like a favourite while Foster & Son Classic line shoe struggles. Although it fit me very well I am not its biggest fan. I also think the price is too high. Should definitely be closer to sub £300 level. Foster & Son is lucky to have his better model in the ranking at high third place!

Biorac pod uwage konkurentow z grupy powyzej, £200 wyglada jak bardzo tani but. Zaczynam od Loake 1880, ktory uzyskal najlepszy wynik, a koncze na Pediwear. Loake i linia 1880 zarowno pod wzlgedem wygladu i ceny przoduja, natomiast linia Classic od Foster & Son troche odstaje. Mimo tego, ze niezle pasowal do mojej stopy to nie zostalem jego fanem. Mysle tez, ze powinien byc tanszy. Zdecydowanie blizej granicy £300. 

The bottom of the ranking belongs to the cheap brands like Charles Tyrwhitt, Loake L1 and John White. All are very basic goodyear welted shoes, still decent, which I will only recommend if you really have to be careful with your expenditures.

Ranking zamykaja tanie marki: Charles Turwitt, Loake L1 oraz John White. Wszystkie to bardzo podstawowe modele  butow ‘goodyear welted’, wciaz przyzwoite, ale polecalbym je tylko osobom, ktore naprawde musza uwazac na swoje finanse.
