Field jacket – spring attire

Field jacket has been a very popular item of clothing for US Army since Second World War. Originally designed in 1940s and produced by Alpha Industries for American Army and Paratroopers is a field coat made of water repellant fabrics. It had flat front, two big pockets on the front and two medium sized breast pockets and a hood which could be rolled and hidden in the back of the collar. Winter versions featured button-in insulation layer.

The most famous version of a field jacket, in olive green colour – shade 107, has been introduced in 1965 as a replacement for 1951 version and was used by US soldiers in Vietnam War, given it M-65 name. It hasn’t undergone any major redesigns since then.

I have written about this jacket about 2 years ago in this post, which I still think is one of my favourite weekend attires. As much as style, taste and our perception changes over the years, and it has been already 2 years since then, I am very proud of it and would certainly, and am, wear it now. This time however I went for a combo of turtleneck and big check sport coat. We took those photos about 2 weeks ago, so in mid March while it was still relatively chilly. Merino wool turtleneck and wool sport coat provided me with layering and kept me warm while the jacket was a casual addition and final layer protective against cold wind. Denim is a natural cloth to go for with olive green field jacket as is suede. This pair is a Carmina semi-brogue oxford on thicker rubber/leather sole, pair that I picked up while in Barcelona.

Hope you like field jackets as much as I do, even if they are not the original M-65 model and only variations. Nothing wrong with using other versions, obviously it would be ridiculous if every brand were to offer the exact same model of this field jacket.

Among popular brands offering nice field jackets these days are Aspesi, Private White and the classic by Alpha Industries.
