Pitti Uomo 89

Rozpoczęliśmy ponad tydzień temu w Neapolu kilkoma wizytami u lokalnych krawców by w poniedziałek przenieść się do pięknej Florencji.

Believe me it is difficult to admit that Pitti Uomo 89 is over. It’s been a great week, both exciting and very busy. Our trip started in south Italy in Naples and continued through most part of the week in Florency only to end with a one-night stay in Pisa. We spent some of our time in Naples visiting tailors and shirtmakers but also strolling around the city which we haven’t visited before. On Monday we went to Florence by train and visited Fortezza da Basso every day until Thursday. Friday is considered to be a ‘dead’ day so we decided to spend it in the city, enjoying views, stores and tasty meals.
First Pitti reviews started as usual with some street style photography, especially from the big guys like the official Pitti Immagine, British GQ, GQ Italia or by blogers like my friends Gentleman’s Choice or Outdersen. I also recommend official styleforum thread on Pitti 89 with plenty of photos by Erik Mannby. First proper review has been published by Sonya Glyn Nicholson in the Parisian Gentleman blog article called 10 Takeaways from Pitti Uomo 89 (AW 16) in which she shared her thoughts on some of the trends, that according to her was quite difficult to define – more on this also later in the post.

What is Pitti for me?

In order my review to make any sense it is essential that I explain what Pitti really is for me. Pitti Uomo 89 has only been my third that I visited. It clearly can be seen that the way I experience the fair changes and is getting more mature. The moment I first stood on the main square in front of the Pavillon was both exciting and unforgettable. It however quickly stepped down and became a past. I guess you could compare it to a first love or kiss. What is more important though is what happens next.
Today, Pitti is mainly a opportunity for me to meet fantastic people working in the menswear industry or simply sharing the same passion for clothes and style as myself. Those meetings, chats, dinners and laughs is the essence of Pitti Uomo for me. Most of the friends I see in Florence do not live in London so I can see them 1-2 times a year and we want to make the most of it. That is the reason nights are so much longer and days busier while in Florence for Pitti. Can’t ask for more than the people who inspire me and give so much energy for the upcoming months.
Of course, biannual trip to Italy is also an opportunity to meet craftsmen and their workshops whether it is Florence, Naples or any other city. Thanks to that hopefully I will be able to share those stories and products with you on the blog. It is not surprising that you do not have to talk me into having fittings for new shirt or a suit in Italy for a very long time.

In general Pitti is a very busy time for everyone. For those who come there to do business, either present collections and sell or as buyers to choose and put orders. Press, bloggers and enthusiasts can’t find enough time to visit every booth or meet everyone they planned to. My plan usually is as follows: meet as many friends during the day as possible, see brands and their stands in the main pavillon, check some new brands and meet representatives and of course take as many photos as possible, most likely with friends. I will also write a short posts presenting my looks from each of the days because there are few interesting products I wanted to show you, even if they are not the latest purchases.

How was it this time?

Zaproszono przedstawicieli producentów skarpet – Bram Frankel z William Abraham , okularów bespoke – Guillaume Clerc z firmy Maison Bourgeat, poszetek -Benjamin Simonnot z Simonnot-Godard, krawatów – Michael Hill z Drake’s oraz kaszmirowych szalików Ann Ryley z firmy Begg & Co oraz Tommaso Melani z Scuola del Cuoio i Stefano Bemer.

The latest, 89th edition of the Pitti Uomo fair is over. It’s been an exciting week-long trip for us. There are two main nights during Pitti, Tuesday and Wednesday night and those are the days when the best events and cocktail parties are organized. We were lucky enough again to be able to participate in both.

First one was the Accessories Symposium hosted by Simon Crompton of Permanent Style and the Stefano Bemer brand producing top quality shoes. Each edition of the Syposium has its main theme. First one was on shoes, second on suits and this time on accessories. Representatives of some of the finest makers in the world has been invited and included: Bram Frankel from William Abraham – socks , bespoke glasses – Guillaume Clerc from Maison Bourgeat, Benjamin Simonnot from Simonnot-Godard – pocketsquares, Michael Hill from Drake’s – ties, Ann Ryley from Begg & Co – cashmere scarves and obviously Tommaso Melani from Scuola del Cuoio and Stefano Bemer. A short overview of the evening has been published by Simon on the blog and he will probably post a more detailed article soon as well. Each of the participants answered about 5-6 questions focused on topics such as craftsmanship, training, influence of social media, future of classic elegance and the China market. All seem to agreed that Chinese market, know until now only as a place for cheap production, is becoming one of the biggest in the world. Stylish and luxury stores like Brio Beijing only confirm this theory. Chinese clearly are not only getting more wealthy but particularly more and more stylish.

It was interesting to see the latest development of some of the brands that went from producing only to selling. There is clearly a trend nowadays that producers are becoming brands, magazines want to sell their own products and even bloggers launch their stores. One of the most recent examples of this would be the renewed menswear magazine The Rake which recently opened its eCommerce store and is offering unique products in cooperation with big brands and makers.

Being able to participate in events like this is obviously a fantastic experience and I am very grateful both to Simon and Stefano Bemer for having us. Not only it is a pleasure to listen to the makers but maybe more importantly the opportunity to meet some of the top manufacturers, buyers, makers and bloggers in the world. Networking in the beautiful surrounding of three-floor high store on the south bank of the river Arno in Florence while being offered wine and having Stefano Bemer shoes on site is a dream come true. The store itself is worth visiting even more when it is packed with some of the most stylish men and women in the world.

This time after the main event, it wasn’t historic villa on the hills surrounding Florence or luxury Four Seasons hotel that greeted quests for cocktails. In an oldschool south European way we were offered some locally made delicious mini burgers which we could enjoy outside the store.

Second big event we were invited to was the Plaza Uomo x Strenstroms cocktail party and celebration of the next issue of their International edition. It was organized by the Sweden based menswear magazine Plaza Uomo and shirt brand Strenstroms. As usual it was located in the beautiful surroundings of Palazzo Budini Gattai, designed by Bartolomeo Ammanati, the designer of famous Ponte Santa Trinita in Florence. In the summer we all enjoyed the evening in spacey garden behind the building, while this time we were able to see many beautiful rooms of the Palace. There were over 400 people coming most of which again being some of the most stylish men and woman in the world, all contributed to amazing atmosphere all evening long. You can see more pictures from the party here.

Any trends?

W mojej ocenie popularne są i wciąż będą męskie kapelusze, dwurzędowe marynarki, okrycia wierzchnie w postaci płaszczy, trzewiki, bardziej sezonowe tkaniny, większa popularność flaneli i męskie torby. Dzianinowe marynarki, drobne wzory, ciekawe tekstury wełny poddanej różnym procesom wykończenia jak najbardziej królują w wielu kolekcjach. Kolory na przyszły rok to burgund, ciemna-butelkowa zieleń, a także dalej klasyka czyli brązy, granaty i szarości.
Czego jest mniej? O dziwo mniej ekstrawagancji i ‘nieznośnych’ kolorów.

Trends and street style photos are the first type of posts that people are interested in reading after Pitti. What trends have I seen? First of all they are not very easy to define, not very clear.

Men’s hats, double breasted jackets and overcoats, overcoats in general, boots, more seasonal fabrics (especially flannel) and men’s bags are very popular. Textured fabrics, small geometric prints – both on ties and clothing and wool with different types of finish are going to be strong in the next few seasons. In terms of colours burgundy, dark/bottle green, shades of brown are common but also classics like grey and navy.

Less popular? I am quite surprised but clearly less fashion and extravagance, less freaking colours. Layering including vests and cardigans was big but much more tuned than before. Nobody seem to crazy about double monks as much and boots are the next thing. No more hundreds of bracelets on your wrists any more too, even on Italians! 😉

Pitti is all about people

To wspólne historie, obiady i żarty do późnych godzin nocnych w pięknej scenerii włoskiej Florencji. Poniżej kilka zdjęć autora.
W kolejnym poście pokażę dokładniej zestawy z poszczególnych dni. Do usłyszenia!

Pitti is for me all about the people. People I know – friends, people who I watch while there and all those who give inspiration. Everyone is there because menswear and clothes is their passion. Dinners we have together, drinks we share and moments we spent together in beautiful Toscan city of Florence are never going to be forgotten. Please find some of the photos we took during the event, hopefully showing you the great time we had there.
In the next post I am going to show you more detailed photos of the outfits from all 3 days of the fair. Enjoy!
