In todays post I am going to focus more on the style. The grey double breasted suit has been my first ever bespoke I purchased and I ordered it at Graham Browne, bespoke tailors in City of London. I have already mentioned it in one of the earlier posts.

One of the first things that tailor asks you about the suit is how are you going to wear it, what is the occasion, how often you are going to wear it or in what weather. In my case it was a wedding suit so I decided on rather elegant but also delicate fabric – s130’s wool. The wedding was in the middle of June so it had to be a lightweight fabric as well. Mid grey colour is very classic and suits a summer suit very well. It is also versatile enough to wear it for work or other less formal occasions. Hence this short series. In 3 posts I would like to show you how you can wear your wedding suit in different environments. You don’t have to be worried that it is a one-day suit and that you are never going to wear it again – it is not a wedding dress luckily. Mens classic elegance doesn’t age very quickly. Once you got your bespoke suit in one of the classic styles and colours it will serve you well many years.

Zamawiajac garnitur bespoke krawiec zawsze najpierw zapyta w jakim celu szyjemy, czy jest to jakas okazja czy po prostu bedziemy go nosic do pracy, jak czesto, w jakich warunkach itd. W moim przypadku to garnitur slubny. Z tego wzgledu zdecydowalem sie na dosc delikatny i lekki material – welna 130’s. Jest to tkanina bardziej elegancka od standardowych 110’s, jednak tez mniej trwala. Szary kolor moim zdaniem bardzo dobrze pasuje na slubny garnitur letni, ale takze jest wystarczajaco uniwersalny zeby nosic go do pracy czy nawet po pracy. To wlasnie cel tego posta. Chcialbym pokazac jak mozna wykorzystac swoj elegancki garnitur w innych sytuacjach i dowiesc, ze dobrze wykonany garnitur na miare bedzie sluzyl wiele lat, w roznych przypadkach.

In the first post of the series I will start with the most formal occasion for your suit – a wedding. Some of you are just having their suits made at the tailor while others are probably considering getting one for late summer/autumn wedding. Does not matter if your suit is single breasted or in navy wool fabric, all those aspects I am going to talk today are still valid. Double breasted suit in my opinion is slightly more elegant than single breasted. Its cut refer a little to a uniform. It is a very good idea to have it made at English tailor or at least in English cut. In this way you will get a little bit more formal looking jacket which will help your posture. English cut is heavier therefore more formal and will help you look more masculine. Classic English double breasted jacket has a slim waist, relatively wide lapels and slightly padded shoulders. Jacket covers your back and trousers are not very slim. Buttons are made as 6×2. I together with the tailor decided on pockets with flaps to make the jacket more versatile in less formal occasions. For the ceremony it is easy to tuck them into the pockets. It will make the jacket look more formal – a similarity to evening wear where only jetted pockets are used (or at least are most common). The second trick is to button 2 rows of buttons. It is another similarity to military uniforms therefore making it look more elegant. However buttoning only one button is perfectly fine and I don’t believe there is any strict rule about it.

Dwurzedowy garnitur jest bardziej formalny od jednorzedowego (dlatego, ze jest bardziej jak mundur). Moim zdaniem lepiej uszyc go u angielskiego krawca, lub przynajmniej w bardziej angielskim stylu poniewaz zwiekszy to jego formalnosc. Szycie na miare zapewni dobre dopasowanie i wrazenie bardzo meskiej figury. Zapewniam, ze bedziecie sie czuc wyjatkowo. Mala uwaga jesli chodzi o detale. Marynarka z kieszeniami z patkami to dobry wybor, ale podczas slubu mozna je wlozyc do srodka – jest to nawiazanie do wieczorowego stroju np smokingu. Tam kieszenie sa tylko ciete bez patek. Kolejny zabieg ktory nawiaze do bardziej eleganckiego odbioru to zapiecie obu guzikow w marynarce, nie tylko gornego. Jest to nawiazanie rowzniej do mundurow oraz angielskiej rodziny krolewskiej, ktora czesto tak wlasnie nosila dwurzedowa marynarke. Nie kazdy musi sie z tym zgadzac i nie jest to regula czy zasada, ale po prostu zabieg, ktory ja stosowalem. Zapiecie na jeden guzik jest jak najbardziej poprawne i normalne. Zostawie je jednak na inne okazje.

During the wedding ceremony a mens look should be classic, elegant and stylish. It is your bride who needs to be in the centre of attention, not you (sorry guys). For those of you who do not wear suit every day it is probably very tempting to ‘show off’ but moderate look is your strength. Let’s focus on fit and quality of the suit rather than on extravagant pocket square or tie. The key to your good look are details. Your shirt should always be white. No cream, pale blue or yellow, no beige etc. White is the most classic and elegant shirt and there are no excuses. It is very important to check the fit of the collar and make sure the collar wings are long enough to hide under the lapel. It is easier to achieve with double breasted jacket because of the wider lapels (usually) but should not be very difficult with single breasted suit either, simply choose a little bit longer collar points in the shirt.

Wyglad mezczyzny podczas slubu powinien byc bardzo elegancki, klasyczny i spokojny. Centrum uwagi powinna byc Panna Mloda. Dla osob, ktore nie nosza na codzien garnituru tak wazne wydarzenie to na pewno kuszaca okazja to ‘pokazania’ swojego stroju, ale umiar jest bardzo oczekiwany. Skupmy sie na dopasowaniu i jakosci, a nie na ekstrawagancji czy modzie. Kluczem sa oczywiscie dobrze dobrane nie tylko pod wzgledem dopasowania, ale takze poprawnosci, dodatki. Wybierajac na ceremonie slubna szary lub granatowy garnitur biala koszula to podstawa. Kazda inna opcja odpada – biala i koniec. Zwroccie tez uwage na dopasowanie kolnierzyka i przyleganie jego wylogow do ciala. Musza one byc wystarczajaco dlugie zeby chowaly sie pod klapami marynarki. Przy dwurzedowej marynarce jest to latwiejsze bo klapy sa blizej i zazwyczaj tez sa szersze, ale do jednorzedowego garnituru potrzeba po prostu koszuli o niewiele dluzszych wylogach.

Tie is key at the wedding. It can easily ruin your look if it is too casual – looks like you took just one of your ties to the office or even worse that you forgot to change after coming back from work. You should invest in a classic wedding tie or choose the most simple one you have, preferably in dark blue/navy. I want to present you two options. One is a classic silk POW (Prince of Wales) check tie in grey. Famous wedding tie, classic pattern, subtle colours and goes very well with navy suit while with a grey one offers a more simple, plain look. The other option would be to go for a navy grenadine tie which I think work even better with the grey suit. Grenadine can be worn in very formal occasions. Dark tie on white shirt and grey suit gives you more contrast. Classic POW tie can be bought at one of the best tie makers in the world Drake’s website/store. For those in Poand you can also get it from Poszetka, although it is not available 100% of the time. Poszetka offers grenadine ties in great prices and just started selling products worldwide. Quick note about Prince of Wales check tie. It has to be this specific pattern and not any other checked tie. I am sometimes shown ties that are bought for the wedding while they are in green or red check – way too casual – and have nothing to do with classic elegance. So ask about POW check or alternatively you can go for similar coloured tie but in different pattern, i.e. pinpoint. Krawat to kluczowa sprawa. Na bialym tle wiekszosc krawatow znaczaco sie wyroznia i wyraznie determinuje styl. Ja zaproponowalbym dwie wersje. Pierwsza to klasyczny wzor Ksiecia Walii – krata, a druga to granatowy krawat jedwabny tkany w splocie grenadynowym. Krata jest wg mnie w tym wypadku delikatnie bardziej klasyczna, jest to znany wzor na krawat slubny. Granatowa grenadyna jest na tyle uniwersalna, ze w zestawieniu z formalnym garniturem bardziej sie wyroznia. Mowi moze ‘znam sie na stylu, jestem swiadomy tego co ubralem’. Moj krawat w krate Ksiecia Walii jest od znanej angielskiej marki Drake’s produkujacej jedne z najlepszych krawatow i akcesoriow meskich na swiecie, natomiast grenadyna od swietnej polskiej marki Poszetka (znajdziemy tutaj tez krawat w kratke Ksiecia Walii, ale nie jest on zawsze dostepny). Uwaga w kwestii krawata w krate. W wypadku slubu musi to byc koniecznie TA krata, nie byle jaka krata. Spotkalem sie z pytaniami, a nawet zakupami krawatow w kratke, ktore w ogole nie pasuja do eleganckiego stylu wymaganego podczas ceremonii slubnej. Krata Ksiecia Walii to klasyka nie bez powodu. Szukajcie tego konkretnego wzoru, a jesli sie nie uda to wersja w dropna pepite bedzie tez bardzo dobra. Takie jak np ponizej od Drake’s.

Once we are done with the shirt and tie there comes the pocket square. There is actually not much choice here: white linen pocket square folded into a square. Classic, simple and very elegant. Please avoid any patterns especially colourful ones. Square like that can be bought in many stores. They are relatively inexpensive but work perfectly. You can get them in a set of 3 so that it is easily to change it if got dirty. During wedding ceremony your goal should be to show respect to your future wife and her family also by the way you dress. This is why I recommend classic accessories and nothing too extravagant. Kolejnym dodatkiem jest poszetka. Tutaj wybor jest prosty: biala lniana zlozona po prezydencku. Prosto i klasycznie, bez zbednych kolorow i modnych wzorow. Takie powinny zostac w szafie na drugi dzien lub inna okazje. Biale lniane poszetki mozna nabyc takze u Poszetki lub w sklepie Szarmanta. Kosztuja niewiele, a sprawdzaja sie swietnie. Wersje z brzegami innych kolorow tez prosze zostawic w domu. Czysta biala poszetka z recznie rolowanymi brzegami to jedyny wybor. Ktos moze poczuc sie ograniczony, ale to wlasnie kwestia podejscia. Ceremonia slubna to moment okazania szacunku takze swoim strojem, wlasnie dlatego polecam klasyczne i eleganckie akcesoria. W kolejnych postach pokaze jak urozmaicic zestaw z szarym garniturem, wiec wtedy bedzie czas na stylistyczne popisy ;).

Last item: flower in the boutonnière. Always put it into the boutonniere (hole in the lapel) and never use those little bouquets attached to the lapel with a pin. Especially if it is in your wife’s bouquets colours or if it matches table cloths. Flower should be fresh and white. Carnation flower is best but peony will work very well too. Before the wedding prepare at least 2 or 3 of those so that you can change them during the evening. It will always look fresh then. Remember: no additional green stalks. One fresh flower is the quintessence of elegance and style.

Pozostaje nam jeszcze ostatnia kwestia czyli kwiatek. Kwiatek zawsze, ale to zawsze powinien byc w butonierce (dziurka w klapie). Nie dajmy sie namowic na przyczepiane szpilka do klapy male bukieciki pod kolor krawata czy dodatkow na stole. Na pewno nie jest to w dobrym guscie i ktokolwiek doradza taki detal jest w bledzie. Mezczyzna podczas ceremonii slubnej powinien miec w butonierce jedynie pojedyczny kwiat – koniecznie swiezy. Najlepiej bialy i idealnie jesli jest to gozdzik, ale piwonia tez sie sprawdzi. Kuszace jest tez dobieranie kwiata takiego samego jak bukiet Panny Mlodej, ale uwierzcie mi, ze np w przypadku rozy Wasz kwiat w butonierce – piwonia – bedzie nie do odroznienia. Zadnej dodatkowej zieleni przy klapie. Tylko pojedynczy kwiat. Bedziecie wygladac nieslychanie elegancko i bardzo klasycznie.
